While driving home after a stressful day or a long week, while glancing at my reflection in the rear view mirror, I’d often whisper three words to myself.

They were the same words each time.

I wish I could tell you those words were ANY of the following ::

  • I love you.
  • You are gorgeous.
  • Damn, you’re good.
  • You kinda rock.
  • You are amazing!

The words I whispered each time were, “You deserve it.”

I know – that doesn’t sound so bad. Right? But I wasn’t referring to scheduling some much-needed self-care or a night out with friends. Nope!

Instead I was talking myself into why I DESERVED bags of fast food or piles of candy.

I already knew how the story would play out. Whatever I brought home, I’d gobble up. It would happen so quickly I’d barely even taste the food. The rest of the evening would be spent wallowing in a depression over my lack of self- control, the pain of my over-stuffed stomach and growing mountains of guilt.

Each time I acted out in this way, it brought misery.

Then one day I realized… I DIDN’T deserve this.

I deserved BETTER.

So do you.

So, what messages do you regularly tell yourself? And is your self-talk serving your highest good?
